Mu-psi: Making the invisible audible— an evening of live experimental music inspired by science and performed by Carla Scaletti and Kyma.

Carla Scaletti is an experimental composer, designer of the Kyma sound design language and co-founder of Symbolic Sound Corporation. Her compositions always begin with a “what-if” hypothesis and involve live electronics interacting with acoustic sources and environments.

Educated at the University of Illinois (DMA, MCS), she studied composition with Salvatore Martirano, John Melby, Herbert Brün and Scott Wyatt and computer science with Ralph Johnson, one of the Design Patterns “Gang of Four.” She received the Distinguished Alumnae Award for invaluable contributions to the field of music from Texas Tech University where she earned her master’s degree in music and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of New Mexico.

Winner of the 2017 SEAMUS Award “for important contributions to the field of electroacoustic music,” she has been invited to present keynote addresses at the International Conference on Auditory Displays (ICAD2017) and the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC 2015), and was an invited participant in GVA Sessions 2015 — a workshop involving choreographers, filmmakers, and particle physicists from CERN — and was a regular lecturer at Centre de Crèation Musical Iannis Xenakis (CCMIX) when it was still in Paris.  Each year, she co-organizes the Kyma International Sound Symposium (KISS).

An introduction to Kyma 7 with emphasis on live interaction and sound design
Kyma 7 is an environment for creating, manipulating, combining and interacting with high-quality audio signals. Used in a wide range of applications from sound design for Hollywood films to experimental performance art; from sound for games to live musical performance with data-driven instruments; from scientific data sonification to research labs and clinical application in speech and hearing science.
This workshop gives an overview of the Kyma environment, with emphasis on some of the new features for helping creatives overcome the “blank-screen syndrome”. It will also include a deep dive into some of the live performance pieces presented at the concert, giving an inside glimpse into how people make music with Kyma. In addition to formal presentations, there will be Open Labs where you can get your questions answered or get a running start on your next project with the help of Kyma/Pacarana designers Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel.
Whether you are a Kyma expert, new to Kyma, or even just curious about Kyma, you’ll come away with increased Kyma mastery, an expanded network of professional colleagues, and inspiration for your further creative work.
Several Kyma systems will be available of participants to use during the workshop
